I am reading The Skin I'm In by Sharon Flake. It is a coming of age story about Maleeka who lives in a large city. Most of it takes place in her school. She is taunted by her peers for her appearance, clothing, and intelligence.
ReplyDeleteIt is very well written. I am interested in knowing what struggles this girl faces, as I did not attend a city school until college. Most of the students in the school are African American, and there is a lot of discussion about the different shades of their skin, and how this affects their friendships and their attitudes towards each other. She is taunted about being smart, and that is just something I can't stand for. All of this has me hooked, and rooting for Maleeka.
I read Lumberjanes 2 by Noelle Stevenson and Grace Ellis. One of the main characters is Jen, the Roanoke leader, who has a darker shade of skin.
